Cousin Lesley

We had a telephone call today from my father in law's cousin Lesley. She a descendant of the Worship family and used to be an actress. Now in her mid 80s, she sounded very elegant and I intend to find some of her films and watch them!

BookCrossing International Secret Santa

I took part in this and received several books from my huge wish list. Inside the parcel was a lovely card and a peice of Christmas cake.

Inside the card was the details that the cake was made using a receipe that originated with the lady's husband's grandfather, who had taken the receipe with him to Canada from England. Family history says that the same cake receipe that was served at the Wedding of Queen Victoria, and that it was fitting to send a peice of the cake back to England. Isn't that just lovely, especially as I have an ancestor who worked at the Royal Household and who emigrated to Canada in 1903.

Thanks so much Wendy, the books are great and the cake tastes wonderful!

Cheeky me, emailed Wendy and asked if I could have a copy of the receipe; and Wendy very kindly sent it to me. I'm going to try the receipe and see how I get on.

Scotland

We're in Scotland, just for weekend collecting my inlaws who will spend three weeks with us in Devon, so they will be with us for Christmas & New Year and a week of normality! The motorway was horrific, It took us 10 hours to get to Southwest Scotland, and thankfully only 6 and a half hours to get back to Devon.

While in Scotland, we went to the cinema to see The Nardia Chronicles: The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe, in, what has to be the smallest cinema I've been in, In Annan. Lovely friendly community and a super film. I wasn't sure if I would enjoy it, as during my childhood I couldn't get into the books and don't remember any television series. It was an excellent film and well worth watching.

Dominic the Italian Christmas Donkey

Dominic the Italian Christmas Donkey by Lou Monte 1967 - MP3 Song

Now you can sing along!

Hey! Chingedy ching,
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
It's Dominick the donkey.
Chingedy ching,
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
The Italian Christmas donkey.
(la la la-la la-la la la la la)
(la la la-la la-la la-ee-oh-da)

Santa's got a little friend,
His name is Dominick.
The cutest little donkey,
You never see him kick.
When Santa visits his paisons,
With Dominick he'll be.
Because the reindeer cannot,
Climb the hills of Italy.

Hey! Chingedy ching,
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
It's Dominick the donkey.
Chingedy ching,
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
The Italian Christmas donkey.
(la la la-la la-la la la la la)
(la la la-la la-la la-ee-oh-da)

Jingle bells around his feet,
And presents on the sled.
Hey! Look at the mayor's derby,
On top of Dominick's head.
A pair of shoes for Louie,
And a dress for Josephine.
The labels on the inside says,
They're made in Brooklyn.

Hey! Chingedy ching,
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
It's Dominick the donkey.
Chingedy ching,
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
The Italian Christmas donkey.
(la la la-la la-la la la la la)
(la la la-la la-la la-ee-oh-da)

Children sing, and clap their hands,
And Dominick starts to dance.
They talk Italian to him,
And he even understands.

Cumpare sing,
Cumpare su,
And dance 'sta tarantel.
When jusamagora comes to town,
And brings du ciuccianello.

Hey! Chingedy ching,
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
It's Dominick the donkey.
Chingedy ching,
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
The Italian Christmas donkey.
(la la la-la la-la la la la la)
(la la la-la la-la la-ee-oh-da)

Hey! Domini

Buon Natale

This is very ambitious - Good luck!

A fellow Book Crosser is attempting to read all the Booker Prize Winner books. Having just watched the awards on the TV recently for the recent winner, I am always amazed at just what books are nominated.

Walkies!

We've just taken Monty, our beautiful Border Terrier into town for a walk. He is not very good with other dogs, so we usually take him to the Heath at Haldon where there are not many people or dogs, but thought we'd try something different today. He was so good, and to celebrate I released a book for Book Crossing for World Space Week. Now, Monty and I are both shattered!

Current mood: happy.

"And at night you will look up at the stars. My star will just be oneof the stars, for you. And so you will love to watch all the stars inthe heavens. In one of those stars I shall be living. In one of them Ishall be laughing. And when your sorrow is comforted (time soothes allsorrows), you will be content that you have known me."

Book Quotations

A Pound of Paper by John Baxter

Page 51-52."Collectors abominate lending libraries. ..........Restoring a library book to collectable condition is like trying to return a Kentucky Fried Chicken to the state of health where it can lay an egg"

Page 86."To me, bookshops have always seemed as rivers do to a fisherman; maybe it's a reflection of Melville's comment in Moby Dick that all thinking people will find their way, sooner or later, to running water."

Page 191."The best fishing, as every angler knows, is found where other fisherman are not"

Patience & Fortitude by Nicholas Basbaines

Page 71
What a place to be in is an old library! It seems as though all the souls of all the writers, that have bequeathed their labours to these Bodleians, were reposing here, as in some dormitory, or middle state. I do not want to handle, to profane the leaves, their winding sheets. I could as soon dislodge a shade. I seem to inhale learning, walking amid their foliage; and the odor of their moth-scented coverings is fragrant as the first bloom of those sciential apples which grew amid the happy orchard."~~~~Charles Lamb, Oxford in the Vacation

Book Crossing wild release

My first ever wild release is caught.

We went over to a local pub for dinner with my cousin. On the way in, at about 7pm, I left a book, A twist in the tale by Jeffery Archer, by the time we left the book had gone. When I got home at about 10.30pm I had a journal entry timed at 7.40pm to say the book had been caught.
If you click the link above, you can see what happens to the book and where it is now.

Reading Wish List!

The list is never ending; and is bound to get longer! These are books that I want to read, or if they are more historical, its because I want to look at them for something I'm working on. I just got fed up with piles of post it notes and slips of paper with names of books on, so I put the lists together in one place and the wish list, which will contain no more than 200 hundred titles is located HERE.

The Shadow Of The Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

This wonderful quote is from the book:

"Every book, every volume you see here, has a soul. The soul of the person who wrote it and of those who read it and lived and dreamed with it. Every time a book changes hands, every time someone runs his eyes down its pages, its spirit grows and strengthens ..."

Italian Snippets

I borrowed a copy of Patience & Fortitude by Nicholas A Basbanes through a BookCrossing Bookring. It is a fascinating book, with far too many snippets that are worth remembering.
ISBN 0 06 051446-9

Here are some that have an Italian slant to them:

"Don Fabrizio Massimo in the archive storage room of Rome's PalazzoMassimo, which contains records documenting more than five centuries of family history; the bookcase in the background [of the photo] was designed for the Massimo family by Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini (1598 - 1680), a leading exponent of the Baroque style in Italy"
(Page not numbered; but a photograph and text are on the pages that are between page 44 & page 45)
